Driver sent to hospital after early morning rollover crash in east Vancouver

A man was hospitalized early Wednesday morning after a rollover crash ejected him from his vehicle and left his car dangling from a tree in east Vancouver.

Vancouver Fire Department crews responded about 2:20 a.m. to the rollover crash in the 18900 block of Southeast 20th Street. There, crews found a vehicle resting on its side with the rear caught in the branches of a tree, hanging above the ground, according to an agency news release.

Responders discovered the driver conscious and alert, despite being thrown from the car during the crash. Vancouver Fire paramedics and American Medical Response provided on-site treatment before the patient was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation, the fire department said.

The crash also severed a gas line, causing a small leak. Firefighters managed to quickly control the flow of natural gas, according to the fire department. NW Natural later arrived to make repairs to the infrastructure.

The Vancouver Police Department said in a social media post the driver, a 19-year-old male, showed signs of impairment and was arrested for DUI. They said he sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local area hospital.

The Vancouver Police Department's traffic unit is continuing the investigation.

Officials have not released the driver's identity.

Fire officials reminded the public that speed, distraction and failure to wear a seat belt remain the leading causes of serious injury in crashes.
