Concrete Bike Park kicks off summer with egg hunt

CONCRETE - Concrete youths made their way to Silo Park in droves Wednesday for the Concrete Bike Park's Golden Egg Bike Hunt.

During the egg hunt, children and teens rode their bikes to find a golden egg. As the hunt began, all participants rode, though many younger attendees eventually walked their bikes.

Each participant received one golden egg and could select a prize, such as a Lego set, a Concrete Bike Park T-shirt, or Hot Wheels.

"I'm just really excited to have everybody be able to enjoy this, to bring the community together," said Stacy Asarian, who is the primary person in charge of the Concrete Bike Park.

In addition to the egg hunt, the Concrete Bike Park was giving away free helmets. There was also free pizza from the Concrete Resource Coalition and free bike repairs from Big T, known as "Upriver Bike Guy."

Big T has given away about 400 bikes at about 10 events in the past three years.

He receives bikes through donations and by looking through garbage. He funds his efforts out of his own pocket and through donations in a jar at events he attends.

"There's a huge need for these children to have bicycles," he said. "I'd rather get them out here on pedals than on social media and their phones. It's time to start getting them back healthy again."

While several areas at Silo Park are dedicated to biking, an asphalt pump track is being constructed on site and is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

A celebration to make the track's completion is planned for July 16 during Concrete Youth Activity Day.

The new track will be open to bikes, scooters, roller skates and other nonmotorized wheeled vehicles.

"As long as there's no motor, they can all cruise," Asarian said.
