Injured climber rescued on Mount Stuart
Chelan County Mountain Rescue on Friday saved two climbers, one of them injured, about 8,400 feet up Mount Stuart, the tallest mountain in the popular Enchantments, near the Long John Tower on the mountain's west ridge route.
Rescue teams dropped down on the mountain by a helicopter unit called Yakima DUSTOFF, which is part of the U.S. Army 16th Combat Aviation Brigade, at about 6,800 feet elevation.
The uninjured climber was secured following a "short traverse" via a belay. The two rescue teams crossed a "massive, steep snowfield" to the injured climber, who was about 100 feet below his uninjured companion, via cams and snow anchors for protection, according to a Chelan County Mountain Rescue Facebook post. The injured climber was able to move on their own, allowing everyone to ascend to safety.
Due to the darkness and the exhaustion of both climbers, the teams camped at 8,400 feet. The next day, the teams rappelled to their insertion point down the mountain, where everyone was hoisted out by Yakima DUSTOFF.
