WordFest hosts last Longview event before summer break

WordFest's last event before its summer break is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Longview.

The free monthly gathering of readers and writers meets the second Tuesday of each month in the church fellowship hall. There will be no meeting in August, but meetings will resume Sept. 8.

This month's meeting is scheduled to include presentations from Michael Wallace, Cheryl Landes and Linda Eddleston. The presentations will be followed by an open mic where people can sign up to read for 10 minutes.

Wallace's father contributed to Sasquatch lore through practical jokes at California logging sites that were not fully revealed until after his death, according to a WordFest press release.

Wallace and his wife Rose live in Southwest Washington. They have two sons, two daughters and 13 grandchildren. He spent the last 36 years as a designer and builder.

Landes plans to read "The Wildest Town in Oregon," a chapter from her latest book, "Those Wild Northwest Days (Second Edition)," a collection of true stories about the Pacific Northwest from the late 1800s through the early 1920s. It was originally published in 2006 and has been updated with new information and photos.

Landes is a technical communications consultant and travel writer. She has published five Northwest travel and history books and contributed to chapters in three works on technical communications. Her book "The Best I Can Do: A True Story of Navigating the Complexities of Mental Illness and Homelessness" won first place in the Journey Awards for Overcoming Adversity in Non-fiction from the Chanticleer Book Reviews.

Eddleston plans to read from her latest writing project, "Play on Words," which explores the challenges posed by words with multiple meanings. She is a retired elementary and special education teacher who has published two books, "My Three Friends" and "Just Call Me Frank: A Story of a Hobo."
