Power outage leaves most of San Juan Islands in the dark

Nearly all of San Juan County is without power.

More than 15,000 customers across the island county, including San Juan, Orcas and Lopez islands, were in the dark Wednesday morning, according to Orcas Power & Light Cooperative, the community's nonprofit co-op utility service.

Puget Sound Energy told the cooperative the outage was the result of an accident on the mainland. Puget Sound Energy reported an outage at 8:20 a.m. resulting from "equipment failure" in Anacortes, where ferries depart for the San Juan Islands, impacting more than 2,700 customers there as well.

A crew from Puget Sound Energy was monitoring a downed power line on Highway 20 in Anacortes Wednesday morning, which was the cause of Wednesday's outage.

Dan Forkan from Puget Sound Energy said there is currently no estimate as to when power will be restored. We're just waiting for a crew from Whatcom County to come with a bucket truck.

Forkan said it was unclear what caused the downed line.
