I-5 ramp to Mountlake Terrace bus station reopens after fiery fatal crash

A driver was killed in a fiery crash Tuesday morning in Mountlake Terrace blocking an Interstate 5 ramp to the freeway median bus station, Washington State Patrol said.

The vehicle was on fire, fully blocking the ramp north of 236th Street Southwest, WSP trooper Kelsey Harding said on X at about 4:30 a.m.

The driver was a 43-year-old man from Ferndale, Whatcom County, WSP said. It is unknown if he was wearing a seat belt or not, or if drugs and alcohol were involved.

He was going north on I-5 when he took the exit ramp to the transit station and crashed into a concrete wall, WSP said.

Video taken by KING 5 shows the smoldering vehicle smashed against the structure. A scorch mark was left over from the fire.

Sound Transit bus service temporarily did pick up and drop off at the nearby park-and-ride facility instead while crews cleared the wreckage, said spokesperson David Jackson.

The ramp was reopened before noon, and bus service was normal by the afternoon, Jackson said. The service elevator in the transit station was cleared to run by inspectors around 11 a.m.
