Seattle offers $80 farmers market gift cards to low-income older adults

Seattle is offering $80 gift cards to older adults with low incomes in King County so they can buy fresh fruits and vegetables at farmers markets.

To be eligible for the gift card, you must be 60-years-old and up, or 55 and older if you are Native American or Alaska Native, as of June 15; earn no more than $2,461 a month (or $3,337 if you're in a two-person household); and a King County resident.

The gift cards are one time only, offered by the Seattle Human Services' Aging and Disability Services division through the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

Anyone who qualifies for the gift cards may apply online by May 8 at sfmnp-seattleking.org or print out a paper application to mail.

The city said fruits, vegetables and whole grains are linked to lower dementia risk, citing a recent Neurology study.
