Chinook, Cayuse passes to open for Memorial Day weekend

Chinook and Cayuse Passes through Mount Rainier National Park are opening in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Otherwise known as Highways 410 and 123, the passes will open by 8 a.m. Friday, said the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Maintenance crews have finished clearing both highways, and the National Park Service is finishing clearing Stevens Canyon Road and Sunrise Park Road, WSDOT said.

Both passes have been closed since October 24 due to increased avalanche risk. Chinook Pass was closed 12 miles west and five miles east of the summit of Mount Rainier. Cayuse Pass was closed eight miles north and five miles south of the summit.

The passes reopening means more access to Mount Rainier National Park for visitors, but commercial vehicles still aren't allowed to travel through the park including on Highways 410 and 123.
