17-year-old fatally shot along road in Pierce County
A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Sunday evening in Parkland, according to the Pierce County sheriff's office.
Deputies responded to emergency calls at around 7:13 p.m. and found the teenager with a gunshot wound lying in the roadway in the 10200 block of Sheridan Avenue South, according to the sheriff's office. They attempted lifesaving efforts, but the teen was pronounced dead.
The teen had been walking with his girlfriend when a vehicle approached and someone called him over. People in the car robbed him of some jewelry, shot him and fled, a sheriff's office spokesperson said, citing preliminary information in the homicide investigation.
The sheriff's office is asking the public for any video surveillance footage that might have recorded the suspected shooters fleeing the area of 102nd Street South and Sheridan Avenue South in Parkland.
The teen and his girlfriend had been walking near tennis courts by Washington High School before heading north on Ainsworth Avenue South to the area where the shooting occurred.
The suspected shooters might have been seen within a 5-mile radius of the shooting location between 4 and 9 p.m., the sheriff's office said.
Correction: This story has been updated to correct the age of the boy killed after the sheriff's office reported it incorrectly. He was 17.
