Seattle weather: Heat wave possible for Egypt vs. Belgium World Cup game
There's a chance Seattle could be looking at its first heat wave of the year just as the city hosts its first game of the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup on June 15.
The immediate future looks like rain, starting out with a chance of showers and even thunderstorms Saturday, so soak it up while you can before things get sizzling.
The National Weather Service is warning that around June 13 to 17, there's about a 20% to 40% chance of extreme heat risk, said meteorologist Matthew Cullen.
It's too far out to estimate how hot it will get that week, Cullen said. For reference, Tuesday was the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures reaching 86 degrees.
But extreme heat risk does mean that anyone without access to cooling or hydration could be at risk of heat illness.
Cairo regularly sees temperatures well north of 90 degrees this time of year, so some at Seattle Stadium (the temporary name for Lumen Field) for the Egypt vs. Belgium game on June 15 might not be complaining.
That may not be the case for Seattleites, however. But we also know Seattle can't agree on what a "heat wave" is anyway.
Nevertheless, if you're going to any outdoor events for the World Cup, or just going outside for a long time at all, it's a good idea to prepare for it, Cullen said. Be sure to do the usual and wear sunscreen, light clothing and a hat, and make sure to bring water and a fan, if you have one.
