Aberdeen man accused of killing, burying toddler son
An Aberdeen man allegedly buried his toddler son in the yard after killing him, according to Grays Harbor County prosecutors.
It's not clear from charging documents exactly how the boy, Aiden, died. Police learned the boy, who would now be 4, had not been seen in more than a year while investigating an unrelated matter" at his father's house, according to charging documents.
The father, 36-year-old Jacob Bevins, is charged with homicide by abuse, first-degree assault of a child, failure to notify coroner of human remains and false statement to a public servant.
After Aberdeen police learned Aiden had not been seen for more than a year, they questioned the boy's mother, who said she had not seen the boy because she had been incarcerated, according to the charging documents. Bevins had primary custody of his son starting in December 2023.
The boy's mother told police Bevins had said Aiden was living with family in Idaho, and Bevins told police the same. A police officer called the family member, who said she had not even met Aiden before.
When the officer told Bevins about their conversation, he "became very upset and started to look at the ground," the charging documents state. The officer asked if Aiden was safe, and Bevins allegedly shook his head before telling the officer the boy was buried under the house.
The Washington State Patrol Crime Lab exhumed the body the next day. Aiden's body was inside a tote bag that was wrapped in a garbage bag, the charging documents state. In an interview, Bevins "appeared to be forthcoming" and said Aiden struck his head and later died, according to the charging documents.
The Thurston County coroner's office determined the boy had "multiple fractures, including ones that were older, and several burn marks to his head, ribs, arms and legs, according to court documents. The boy likely died between March 2024 and August 2024, when he would have been 2 or 3 years old.
The officer spoke with a child abuse expert, who said the boy would not have been able to cause those injuries himself, the court documents state.
Aberdeen police arrested Bevins. After being read his Miranda rights, he allegedly said Aiden died while Bevins was chasing him, and the boy slipped and hit his head.
Bevins is being held in the Grays Harbor County Jail in lieu of posting bail of $150,000.
