No chemical spill found after emergency response at Longview plant

Emergency responders arrived at what was initially feared to be a chemical spill Wednesday morning at Nippon Dynaware, the same industrial pulp and paper mill in Longview where a chemical tank failure killed 11 workers on May 26.

An employee operating a forklift carrying an empty or near-empty sulfuric acid container is suspected to have veered into a dip while experiencing a medical emergency, and the container fell over, a spokesperson from the Longview Fire Department said.

Seven units responded to the call, but crews found no other injuries or hazardous materials released, the spokesperson said. Responders noted an odor and irritant, but it was determined to be hydrogen sulfide likely coming from a nearby sewer and was unrelated to the medical emergency, according to the department spokesperson.

The employee was taken to Longview's PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center, according to a post from the department.

His condition was not known.
