Woman struck, killed by Sounder train near Seattle's Carkeek Park

A 25-year-old woman died after being struck by a Sounder train Tuesday afternoon, Seattle police said.

The woman was on the tracks near Carkeek Park when she was hit by a train traveling northbound, police said.

The woman's friends had been on the beach at the time and saw her get struck by the train, said police spokesperson Brian Pritchard.

Officers responded to a call after 4:45 p.m. and found the woman on a rock by the tracks.

Seattle Fire Department crews were unable to save her.

It is unknown why the woman was on the tracks, police said.

The Sounder train was full of people at the time, Pritchard said. It stopped about 50 to 75 feet down the tracks, where it stayed for a "significant amount of time" while police investigated.

Passengers were told another train would come to get them, Pritchard said.

The tracks reopened after the investigation was completed, police said.
