More snow possible Wednesday, as fast-changing forecast creates uncertainty
A few inches of snow in the Thurston County area Tuesday morning provided a snow day for thousands of kids, and created an icy commute for workers.
While the forecast for South Sound is for clear skies through about 10 a.m. Wednesday, the snow that starts falling then and into the evening could be significant — although temperatures also are expected to rise, which adds uncertainty. The Wednesday evening storm could be accompanied by strong winds.
“The forecast has changed rapidly over the last 12 hours — and may change more,” the National Weather Service reported Tuesday morning.
North Thurston, Tumwater and Yelm school districts closed Tuesday, and most other districts opted to start at least two hours late to account for icy roads.
North of Seattle the weather was worse. Thousands were without power in the greater Seattle area into Monday evening. Eastbound Interstate 90 shut down at milepost 106 about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday due to a jack-knifed semi truck, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
On Monday evening about 30 cars were involved in separate collisions on the State Route 520 floating bridge in Seattle, closing all the westbound lanes, which became slick when temperatures dropped.
So far the forecast is for rain to return to South Sound Thursday and hang around into next week.
