Olympia heatwave brings 90-degree weather before cool down and possible rain

A heat wave will push temperatures up to the mid-90s on Sunday and Monday, before a cool down and possible rain rolls in by Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunday and Monday will see temps in the high 80s to mid 90s, with a 50% to 80% chance of exceeding 90 degrees on Sunday, according to the forecast. Despite the high temperatures, the lows are still projected to be in the upper 50s to low 60s at night.

The average high temperature for this time of year is around 78 degrees while the average low is around 51 degrees.

Forecast for highs and lows:

  • Sunday: 90/55

  • Monday: 94/56
  • Tuesday: 80/51
  • Wednesday: 85/53
  • Thursday: 80/55
  • Friday: 71/55, with a small possibility for rain

The heat probably won’t set any records: The record high for Sunday is 96 degrees while Monday’s record is 99 degrees. Both were set in 1998.

The conditions will dry out grasses, which makes for an elevated chance of grass fires from Sunday though Tuesday, according to the weather service. There is also a moderate heat risk for people who are sensitive to heat and those who aren’t properly hydrated.

Relief could come towards the end of the week though, with a return to the low 70s and a 40 percent chance of rain.
