Get out the fans, sprinklers and popsicles. Forecast calls for a high of 96 on Sunday
If you thought summer was just going to peter out as we head into September, you would be wrong. Get ready for a warm, warm weekend throughout most of Washington state.
The Olympia area is going to heat up starting Saturday, when the high temperature is expected to reach 89. But that’s just the appetizer.
On Sunday, the high is expected to reach 96. Whew. That day is likely to bring the highest temperature the area has seen all year.
Highs will remain summertime warm but nice — in the mid 80s — Monday and Tuesday.
But if you can keep your house ventilated (or air conditioned), the high heat should be tolerable. Low temperatures are supposed to dip back into the upper 50s every night.
The hot, dry weather prompted the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to temporarily ban the discharge of firearms for target-shooting or other purposes by anyone not engaged in lawful hunting. The goal is to prevent wildfires, a DNR news release issued Friday says.
The ban will apply to 3 million acres of DNR-managed lands. This includes state forests, community forests, and forested state lands. The temporary ban goes into effect at midnight Saturday, Aug. 15.
Discharging firearms poses a greater risk in dry conditions as bullets pass through decayed wood, cause sparks off rocks, or break into fragments in dry grass, the news release says.
This temporary rule — in effect until further notice — does not restrict hunting.
A burn ban is currently in effect on DNR lands statewide.
