Olympia area to get intermittent snow showers through Thursday, forecast shows
The Olympia area will likely get intermittent snow showers through Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service in Seattle issued a winter weather advisory for the region Wednesday morning that warns of variable snow accumulations and slippery road conditions until 10 a.m. Thursday.
Daytime highs are expected to be around 40 degrees in the Olympia area while overnight temperatures will be in the 20s. That means any snowfall may transition into precipitation and any melting snow may refreeze overnight to create black ice.
Less than 1 inch of snow is expected to fall on the Olympia area through Thursday morning, according to the forecast. However, heavier snowfall amounts may be possible in localized areas.
The NWS is advising the public to slow down and use caution while traveling, and prepare for possible power outages.
Partly sunny skies are expected Friday followed by a chance of snow showers starting again Friday night, forecasters predict.
There’s a 10% chance of more than 1 inch of snowfall from 4 a.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday in the Olympia area. The chance for more than 2 inches of snow is just 2% over the same time period.
Colder than normal temperatures are expected to continue into next week. Some amount of snow and rain may return then, but the NWS says timing and amounts remained uncertain.
Weather impacts as of Wednesday afternoon
The Olympia and Tumwater school districts placed all Wednesday afternoon buses on snow routes, but all scheduled after-school activities continued.
The Skokomish Tribe closed all tribal buildings at 1 p.m. Wednesday due to the weather.
The University of Washington’s Tacoma campus announced it will open at 10 a.m. Thursday.
