Freeway crash in whiteout conditions near Portland causes 100-vehicle pileup

Authorities say an interstate crash near Portland, Oregon, in whiteout conditions caused a more than 100-vehicle pileup.

“An SUV caught fire in the pileup on I-84, that’s described by deputies as involving more than 100 cars, trucks and semi-trucks,” the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Everyone was able to get out of the SUV. Responders are going car by car. There are reports of injuries, no number at this time. Whiteout conditions. I-84 westbound remains closed at Multnomah Falls.”

The crash happened about 11 a.m. Thursday.

According to Wright Gazaway, a reporter for Portland’s KATU, the Oregon State Police said most of the reported crashes are non-injury or minor injury. “There are no known fatal injuries or even serious injuries at this time. OSP and partners agencies are working to clean up the area. ... Extended delays are to be expected.”
