Sign up Tuesday on voter registration day

The Nov. 8 election season is fully upon us, and our main editorial today marks the first of The Olympian’s campaign endorsements.

Expect more endorsements as Oct. 21 inches closer. That’s the date when 4.1 million ballots mailed to Washington voters.

Tuesday, Sept. 27, is National Registration Day for voters, according to Secretary of State Kim Wyman, a Republican facing a vigorous re-election challenge from Democrat Tina Podlodowski.

The deadline for online or mail-in voter registration is Oct. 10.

Wyman said Friday that Facebook is reminding voters Friday through Monday to register. Wyman’s state elections office is also sending postcards to about 140,000 potentially eligible voters not yet signed up.

Outreach to entice more voters to participate in democracy is a good thing. It’s also a major campaign issue for Wyman and Podlodowski.

We’ll discuss whether Wyman is doing enough to promote voting on another day.

Meantime, Wyman is expecting a surge in registrations from teaming up with Facebook. The previous one-day record was on March 18, when 13,109 signed up during an earlier Facebook drive.

Let’s go for broke, Washington state. Encourage friends to register.
