Something to say? We have a role for you
The Olympian’s editorial page has openings for writers on our volunteer Board of Contributors in 2017. If you are someone with something to say and can get it down in words, you should get in touch.
You may be a state worker, student, issue advocate or neighborhood activist. You also may have a special knowledge from your profession. Or your passion may be education, the environment, healthcare, the economy or spirituality.
Given a chance to write a newspaper column almost every six or eight weeks next year, what would you write about? Are you liberal, conservative, something else? What section of our South Sound community would you represent?
The good run of writers on the 2016 Olympian Board of Contributors is coming to an end early next year, and we’re throwing open the door for a new team of writers (the position is unpaid).
The best contributors focus their columns on local issues, or on how local events fit into the national and international context. They offer solutions to problems facing the community and the region.
By inviting local writers onto our pages each week, we hope to bring fresh South Sound voices into the community conversation.
We invite you to send us a self-nomination letter today. Here's how to apply:
▪ Send The Olympian a cover letter with information about your educational and occupational background and any relevant ethic background. Tell us why you want to write a newspaper column. Include any particular area of expertise or passion, your political philosophy and mention any writing experience.
▪ Provide two writing samples of no less than 600 words on current topics (guest columns run about 700 words).
▪ Send your self-nomination letter and writing samples to: Board of Contributors, The Olympian, 111 Bethel St. NE, Olympia, WA 98506. Or you can send them electronically to: bshannon@theolympian.com, putting "Board of Contributors" into the subject line.
We want to hear from you soon. The deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9.
EDITORIAL BOARD: We’re similarly looking for a pool of diverse candidates to serve as community members on The Olympian Editorial Board. This volunteer role requires weekly attendance at board meetings. Participants join interviews with newsmakers and help to shape editorial positions.
Our board typically meets at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays.
As with the volunteer columnists, send a self-nomination sample, a description of your background and philosophy, and what you’d bring to our board discussions. Address it to Editorial Board/community member, The Olympian, 111 Bethel St. NE, Olympia, WA 98506.
Or send your query by email to bshannon@theolympian.com and put "Editorial Board/community member" in the subject line.
The deadline is also Dec. 9.
