Independent prosecutor needed last year

Tuesday, President Trump fired FBI director Comey. Shortly thereafter Sen. Schumer of New York said it was time for an independent prosecutor to look into the Comey matter.

I agree. Last year during the presidential campaign, Director Comey held a news conference regarding Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified documents/emails. Comey said that the FBI had found no less than five instances in which Hillary had sent classified information to an unsecured server and during her questioning with the FBI had for all practical purposes committed perjury twice. That’s eight counts of breaking the law, any of which would get me thrown in jail.

But wait! Since, according to Comey, Hillary didn’t know she was doing anything wrong, there is no reason to prosecute her. She didn’t know she had signed an affidavit as secretary of state saying she had read and understood the rules regarding the proper storing and sharing of classified material. Comey reasons that her offenses did not rise to the level of prosecution, as she did not do this with any intent. She did it because she was stupid.

What a defense! What happened to “ignorance of the law is not an excuse”? Sen. Schumer is right. We need an independent prosecutor. We needed one about 10 months ago.
