Projects will cause more parking headaches
After reading the Olympian article on the new project that is to be built downtown, the powers to be should be able to see why they have a parking problem.
The project is already short six parking spaces. If all the other apartment projects have the same shortage ratio well there is some of your problem. Most families or couples have two cars or is that not the case when you live in Olympia?
Further more, I bet the building owners are allowed to charge the occupants extra for the use of the parking space. With rents already sky high most renters probably park on the street. At least six in the dockside flats will have to when it is completed. This does not take into consideration the restaurant or the retail shops. With all the surveys the city has done on downtown parking they should get their money back.
A simple solution for future projects is to have adequate off street parking for each unit without extra fees for parking spaces. Its undoubtedly too late for existing apartment buildings but not for the future buildings, this is all possible unless Olympia wants to have the same problems as Seattle does.
