ACA repeal hurts Americans
In May, the House of Representatives passed its repeal of the ACA, which the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates will cause over 20 million Americans to lose health coverage and impose an $800 billion cut on the Medicaid program, which primarily serves children, disabled and elderly. Now, in total secrecy, the Senate is on the verge of passing similar legislation before the end of June. There has never been legislation of this magnitude passed without committee hearings and an opportunity for public review and input.
While no one outside a few Republican senators and staff has seen the Senate version, it appears the Senate repeal bill will follow the House version, allowing states to eliminate Essential Health Benefits (EHB), such as maternity and mental health coverage. The bill appears to cut premium assistance, making coverage unaffordable to millions. The cuts to Medicaid will decimate the program, causing children, disabled, and elderly people to lose coverage and benefits. As funding declines, critical services, such as nursing home care, will be put at risk.
It’s painful that our Congressional representatives would pass a bill that will hurt so many Americans. That they would do so in an undemocratic and secretive manner is unconscionable.
