Seek car wash with run-off treatment

The start up of school means that many of us will have the opportunity to avail ourselves of car wash fundraisers, while the ash storm means that many of us will want to avail ourselves of such an opportunity. Unless the fundraiser is at a facility with proper treatment of the run-off, please don’t avail yourself: Untreated car wash run-off is a significant source of pollution in Puget Sound (ecy.wa.gov/washington_waters/docs/factsheet_carwash.pdf), and the ash from these fires does contain toxic heavy metals and PAH’s (wasmoke.blogspot.com/).

Find some other way to support the cause trying to raise funds (e.g., pull up and write them a check, and make it clear why you are not using their car wash service), and please get your car washed at a commercial facility with proper run-off treatment. Would-be car wash fundraiser organizers: please arrange to conduct your fundraiser at a location with proper run-off treatment, or find some other way to raise funds: The Sound thanks you!
