Congress passes Global Food Security Act

Recently, members of Congress on both sides of the aisle came together to help people living in hunger and poverty around the world. Before heading home to campaign, the U.S. House of Representatives reauthorized the Global Food Security Act, ensuring our nation’s continued leadership in addressing the root causes of hunger through agricultural development and nutrition. Members of Bread for the World — a Christian advocacy group working to end hunger — have been urging our representatives and senators to cosponsor and pass the legislation since it was introduced. The Senate passed the bill earlier this year, and President Trump is expected to sign it into law. I applaud Rep. Heck and Sens. Cantwell and Murray for their support.

The Global Food Security Act has saved and improved the lives of millions of men, women and children, since it was first passed in 2016. And on less than one half of one percent of the federal budget, we will save far more in the years to come, as the need for future emergency humanitarian and military intervention in struggling communities is lessened considerably.

In other words, reauthorizing the Global Food Security Act was both the right thing and the smart thing to do. Along with the families and communities who have improved their lives thanks to the Global Food Security Act, and the millions more who will benefit in the years to come, I am grateful that Congress put aside their differences and did something good for hungry people.
