Letters to the editor for Dec. 4
Realtors helping the community
For 130 years, The Salvation Army Olympia Corps has been helping those folks who need help. Bus passes, rental assistance, utility assistance, cold weather sheltering, community kitchen that serves three meals a day, 365 days a year, and more. It is what we do, it is in our DNA.
This is the eighth year that Thurston County Realtors have rung the bell for The Salvation Army. We will be at local Walmart, Fred Meyer, Safeway, Haggen Foods, Ralph’s Thriftway and Cabela’s stores on Friday, Dec 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Please visit these stores and drop a few bucks in the red kettles. You will feel better about yourself, and you will be helping our community.
Thank you!
Appropriate dress for the grocery store
Recently The Olympian sent a digital ad for Sunday coupons with a photo from October 1956: “Dressed to the nines, a woman stocks up on breakfast cereal at her local grocery store.”
While the woman’s outfit might be a bit fancier than necessary for a grocery store trip in 1956, most women that year would have worn, at the least, a skirt and blouse, stockings, heels and makeup to the grocery store.
There was a formality to women’s attire in the 1950s for all aspects of life. My grandmother owned no slacks of any kind. My mother would change out of what she was wearing in the house to go to the store, starting with “putting on her face” (makeup) down to putting on a pair of heels.
Happily, things have changed, and I can go grocery shopping in blue jeans!
Pentagon chief fires top Navy official
How much longer will President Trump’s “Russian Republicans” sit on their thumbs while Trump destroys every institution of American democracy? Having gutted the State Department and embarrassed us internationally, supported the racists, misogynists and sexual perverts to demoralize us nationally, deregulated our industries to poison our air, water and earth, he has now set his narrow-minded, mean-spirited sights upon our military.
My grandfather, three uncles, two cousins, my father and mother served in the Navy. They are all spinning in their graves as draft-dodger Trump elevates and rewards a thug war criminal and demeans and denigrates heroes like Sen. John McCain and Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman. How much longer will his brainwashed sycophants lick his boots as our honored military are turned into murderous mercenaries working for the Saudis and abandoning our allies to be invaded and massacred?
