Letters to the editor for Dec. 18
Democrats overriding the will of the people?
Republican politicians are saying that Democrats pushing the impeachment process are trying to “override the will the people.” If I’m not mistaken, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by about 3 million votes. Wasn’t that the will of the people? Just asking....
A political hit job
The Republican defense in current hearings has been, “It’s a political hit job.” They certainly know, first hand, political hit jobs — for example, Benghazi, “Russia if you are listening.” I could go on but you get the idea.
Sometimes the only way to stop bullies is to hit them and hit them hard. Trump is a bully.
Fake news threatens democracy
Thank you for printing the Dec. 12 article about the UW and WSU’s Center for an Informed Public. We certainly need a reliable source for sorting out the fake news that is crowding out real news now.
Victims of President Trump’s fake news attacks such as the refugees seeking help at our southern border need to be vindicated with honest recognition for the reality of their plights in their home countries, and not be sent back there to be killed.
Most of us here are descendants of refugees from somewhere else. No one coming to us for help should ever be put immediately into jail. And no families should ever be separated. This totally un-American cruelty is the result of Trump and his supporters disseminating fake news about them. Don’t believe it; we are better than this. All of our various religious traditions teach us to welcome the stranger.
We can’t stop the mistreatment of our refugees and other immigrants, and even of undocumented people who have lived here for decades and become a necessary part of our economy, until we get rid of our cruel and lying President, and we can’t impeach him for cruelty and lies. Now that he has unquestionably given us grounds for impeachment, by all means we should do it. Even if the Senate hasn’t got the guts to put America first and convict him, his treachery will be known to the voters and hopefully they won’t reelect him.
