A deed that cannot be undone

The government of the USA has carried out a deed that cannot be undone: murdering a military leader of a country with which the USA had not previously been at war.

The current government of the USA has deemed “targeted killings” (as opposed to “assassinations”) to be permissible.

I consider both of those practices to be evil and to represent murder.

Right now, the only action I see which I can do in protest is to write this letter and to vote against the current president of the USA in the next election. Before that time, I expect to see more acts of violence on the international scene, violence encouraged and often carried out at the express orders of this current USA president.

What a tragedy! How unnecessary.

James Fett, Lacey

Are we still a republic?

Obviously the requirements for attaining a political office seem to be relegated to financial backing, brainwashing, deceit and egocentrism.

Because of an ever-changing society, it is difficult to hold on to those personal characteristics exemplified by leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglas or Lucy Stone. These diverse leaders seemed to respond to a need for objective thinking while maintaining strong principles and an inner fire for justice. As intense as the issues of the time were, they dared to walk the edge and place themselves in peril while fighting for a cause within the parameters that were set up by founding leaders.

Today so many of our leaders feel that they are above the law. They oftentimes stoop to classless rhetoric that is backed by ignorance and a bullying mentality. They feel that they only answer to themselves and the whims of their emotions.

Our populace needs to examine the basis and roots of our governmental system and come to the realization that we are a democratic republic and not an aristocracy. Our president needs to champion the ideals and practices laid down by our Constitution; and avoid the destruction of a people-based society. Maybe some of our citizens will re-educate themselves and not follow blindly the lies and inarticulate statements of a narcissistic regime.
