The impeachment trial

The “fair and balanced” impeachment trial is underway. A Supreme Court Justice oversees candor and decorum. We demand civility and napkins during the “hold it down” phase of the Senate trial.

No direct witnesses, documents or testimony needed in the Senate trial to render impartial justice. “Bogus” articles of impeachment from second-hand witnesses, deep state bureaucrats, and overzealous never Trumpers is “all the truth” Mitch McConnell can stomach. At least put Jack Nicholson on the stand. I want to hear him scream, Republicans, “You can’t handle the truth!”

Indeed, what a sad day for truth, justice and the American way. Superman, where are you now? Are dictators and kings watching our “model democracy” in action? Trump’s behavior isn’t going to change — the courts, tweets and rallies prove that. Senators render impartial justice, not blind or partisan justice. It’s easy, Republicans, all you need to do is pretend Hillary is President and did what Trump did. The outcome would be bipartisan conviction and removal.

What about Trump swindling millions from charities for his personal use? But the economy is great, stupid. Forty million living in poverty need motivation and trickle-down prosperity. Let’s start by taking away their health care and food stamps. Is it basically, they don’t vote, so they don’t count, so we don’t care?

If Trump is acquitted and re-elected. I hope Democrats take the Senate and hold the House and send over new articles of impeachment for a speedy and biased trial. Just like Midnight Mitch wanted.

Keeping tabs on the Legislature

Looking for a way to stay current with the Legislative session that started Jan. 13? The League of Women Voters of Washington publishes its Legislative Newsletter on Sundays throughout the session, which runs through March 12.

As the League’s Lobby Team Issue Chairs advocate for legislation, the Legislative Newsletter will provide updates about pertinent legislation and activities at the Capitol. The newsletter will carry Action Alerts asking readers to send an email about an issue to one or all of their legislators. Responding to these alerts is a great way for you to have a big impact with a small investment of time.

The newsletter also carries links to the issue web pages where the Lobby Team will be posting updates so you can check out the issues of most interest to you.

To learn about the League’s legislative action and to subscribe to the Legislative Newsletter, visit www.lwvwa.org/advocacy.

You also can join others interested in issues at 10 a.m. every Tuesday at the Thurston League’s Coffee with the League at Mud Bay Coffee, 1600 Cooper Point Road. Now is the time to be involved!
