Letters to the editor for April 3
Sanders should drop out now
Bernie Sanders has now fallen prohibitively behind Joe Biden in his race for delegates to be nominated as the Democratic candidate to defeat Donald Trump in the November elections. By not conceding this fact, it would seem that Bernie’s ego now takes precedence over concern for safety of all voters who would have to put themselves at great personal risk in future primary elections by exposing themselves in voting areas where minimal health guidelines to reduce risk of exposure to the deadly COVID-19 virus are almost impossible to safely meet.
I would ask Bernie to get real. You fought a good fight and forced mainstream Democrats to give credibility to several of your concerns; however now is the time to step aside with honor and discontinue your course of action, which, if continued, has the potential of causing fatal consequences to far too many Americans. Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike.
The goal of this year’s primary elections for Democrats is to choose a leader to challenge the demagogue currently in the White House and put normalcy in leadership back in our government. Vastly unlike our current president whose first reaction to this disease now spreading throughout the world was inexcusable denial; then when confronted by overwhelming scientific fact taking very slow actions to begin combating this deadly pandemic. Failing to realize that COVID-19 like cancer, another equal opportunity destroyer, causes overwhelming suffering to all Americans.
Surviving the coronavirus
School closings, sports event cancellations, food hoarding. ... We live in a new coronavirus-induced world. Yet some personal health facts remain unchanged.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offer good advice for preventing community spread and personal infection: apply social distancing, sanitize surfaces, wash your hands, don’t touch your face. But, there’s more. ...
Does anyone wonder why uncounted numbers of infected people develop no symptoms and only 20 percent of symptomatic people require hospitalization? It’s because they have an effective immune system able to fight off the virus. But the CDC does not talk about that.
Fortunately, good advice on boosting our immune system is readily available on the internet from trusted sources like WebMD and Healthline. And the advice is always the same:
- Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables, including citrus fruits and leafy greens
- Refrain from dairy, other fatty animal products, and sugar-laden foods
- Maintain daily exercise of 30-60 minutes
- Minimize your stress level and get adequate sleep
Did I mention that this advice works great for all other nasty bugs as well?
