Climate action needs to include trees
I read with interest the “Anatomy of a climate action plan” in The Olympian, but was discouraged that the action plan only addresses limiting greenhouse emissions. A larger part of the equation would be greenhouse gas absorption.
Can you see the bright green on the tips of the fir trees? That’s carbon made visible. Trees eat carbon dioxide. It is estimated the world has lost a seventh of all its trees. Small wonder we have a build-up of greenhouse gases, not only from cars and factories, but forest fires and volcanoes as well.
When our rain falls on warm roofs and asphalt to creeks without trees and lakes bordered by lawns, it is not surprising the ocean has begun to warm – and maybe because we do have a lot of rain here, Puget Sound could be pivotal in causing climate change.
Want to absorb carbon dioxide? Plant trees.
Want to cool your home in summer? Plant trees.
Want more to save birds? Plant trees.
Want to add value to your home and neighborhood? Plant trees.
And let’s bring clippers as we walk through a forest to help rescue trees from the ivy that is strangling so many. We need these trees.

Vote for Bateman for Legislative District 22
I’ve known Jessica Bateman for over 10 years and have found her to be an incredibly smart, articulate, well-rounded leader in the community. I am regularly impressed with her ability to compassionately listen to a broad range of perspectives and make decisions on tough issues.
Our community is dealing with critical public health concerns right now. Jessica’s experience as a health policy analyst and her years serving the community via the Olympia City Council (currently as Mayor Pro Tem) and as a legislative aide to Rep. Chris Reykdal bring much-needed expertise and resources to the table.
In addition to the pandemic at hand, the South Sound community is struggling with housing and homelessness. Jessica has been a champion on these issues. She worked for over two years to successfully pass the Home Fund in Olympia, providing much-needed revenue for housing. This winter, construction will begin on 120 units of shelter and permanent supportive housing — the first Home Fund project. Under Jessica’s leadership, the city of Olympia has created a continuum of behavioral health supports and services including increased shelter capacity and temporary housing.
Now, more than ever, we need a proven leader with experience in creating and implementing public policy. The Legislature will be charged with making extremely difficult decisions next session. Jessica embodies the values of the 22nd District and has the knowledge, skills, and experience to address the challenges our community is facing.
Vote yes for Jess for LD 22!
