If we insist on war the draft is necessary
Hopefully those demanding we reject the Iran treaty will also demand we re-start the draft.
You can see the wisdom here if you reflect on the history of the last several wars.
Do you recall the promises of quick victory made before? There was Johnson’s escalation, Nixon’s Vietnamization, and Cheney’s tortured policy of Shock and Awe.
In the end they all relied on boots on the ground. In the end, we left much of our treasure and too many boots behind in the civil war jungles and deserts abroad. The global corporations use our troops and treasure to secure access to cheap natural resources and labor abroad.
Then the Halliburton’s-war-profiteers move to Dubai to escape scrutiny and taxes. They leave us to care for our wounded warriors with slashed domestic budgets.
The pursuit of endless and unfunded wars will destroy this great country quicker than any axis-of-evil ever dreamed. Back home the war-mongering conservatives whine about the deficit they create. Then they try shutting down the government while sheltering the rich from paying taxes.
The one-percenters win and we all lose. If we reinstate the draft hopefully the first names pulled will come from a roster of chicken-hawks like Lindsay, Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld, Romney, Cruz and other members of the endless-war clan. If they had to shed real blood, sweat and tears I’m certain going to war would be less attractive and suddenly diplomacy would be in vogue.
