U.S. Sen. Schumer is not qualified for leadership
I have long been wary of U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, given his propensity to seek the camera.
His latest foray into the limelight is revelatory. His opposition to the treaty may be based on sincere belief, but I doubt it.
If sincere, he misinterprets the terms of this unprecedented deal and is less than thoughtful about the consequences of the failure to ratify it. More likely, his is a cynical calculation.
Sen. Schumer sees himself sitting in Harry Reid’s chair as Democratic leader after Reid’s retirement, that prospect is the motivating factor for his stance on this deal. He believes his opposition will bring him the support of more conservative senators while his decision not to whip for the deal’s rejection will mollify more liberal senators.
His stance is based on thoughtful analysis, but of his personal opportunity for advancement, not the nation’s best interest. This should disqualify him for the leadership position.
I call on Sen. Patty Murray (No. 4 in Senate Democratic leadership right behind Schumer) along with Sen. Maria Cantwell, to vote and “whip” in favor of the proposed deal with Iran. I ask Senator Murray to consider running for Reid’s position herself. She has what it takes.
