Separation of religion and state is part of our freedom
Government is always telling citizens what we are supposed to do, and now what we must believe. What happened to freedom of choice and separation of state from religion?
In a modern society it is easy for each citizen to elect (record at the county) the form of ownership and responsibility they want to be bound by. For example, separate or community property rights and child rearing laws may have evolved from Christian backgrounds as a functional process (largely to protect children), but now exist in law, separate from the historical basis.
The church can marry people the way they want to. The citizen can elect the way they will hold property, raise children, and pay income tax without being in conflict with the church.
Freedom is a great idea. It is entirely possible, does not require significant government administrative change, and saves money.
It is not easy telling everyone what they must do, and even more costly forcing them to do it.
But it does mean that some people will do it differently. Freedom.
