Good race but it's Downing for commissioner

Joe Downing has my vote for district 1 port commissioner. Joe is running against incumbent George Barner, who’s seeking his third term on the Olympia Port Commission.

George is a great guy – he’s given generously of his time to government service since 1977. I’m particularly appreciative of his leadership in the late 1980s in creating the rails-to-trails conservancy strategy we’ve used since to establish most of our trails. Our amazing trail network is part of his legacy. But it’s time for new thinking about port issues and opportunities.

Joe’s background in finance will serve us well as he helps increase the port’s capacity to grow family wage jobs. His experience on the port’s Citizen Advisory Committee will inform practical and responsible decisions affecting small business startups and large, established tenants leasing port property. His passion for sailing, Puget Sound, and outdoor recreation ensures public access and environmental health will be at the forefront of his thinking about the port’s social and environmental responsibilities.

For the first time in a long time, I’m excited about the port’s potential with Joe on the commission working alongside Jerry Farmer and Bill McGregor. Joe believes in the port’s unique role in a healthy, resilient economy. I believe in Joe’s ability to make sound decisions that are reasoned and consistent, decisions that support the port’s role.
