Let’s reframe fear and embrace others
I was saddened to read the Dec. 24 letter from Karen Menear. My first response brought to mind a number of thoughts and sayings to admonish (e.g., “we have nothing to fear but fear itself,” “do unto others as you would have others do unto you,” “walk a mile on my shoes”). But then I wondered what her experiences with immigrants and refugees have been that have caused such fear.
And then I wondered if maybe that energy spent in being afraid could be used to reach out to those who so need our friendship and the beliefs that are driving that fear could be reframed to embrace those who are coming to our shores looking for a better life and to see all they have to offer.
