Bernie or Bust is only for the privileged
With Trump as the apparent Republican nominee, it is time to have a real deep think about the #BernieorBust idea. And by this I am talking about those who have expressed that they will only vote for Sanders and will use a write in for his name.
It is time to take a look at its privilege. Following its logic the idea doesn’t care about the outcome of the election. A split write in ticket means that a Trump win as a result is equal to the feeling like you are “on the right side of history.” This means the voter is in a place of privilege and perspective where there is no difference in the outcome.
But to immigrants, religious minorities, people of color, women, the poor, LGBTQ and many more there is a great deal at stake. The difference between the major party candidates will be vastly different to these communities. Their tenure and ability to select of Supreme Court justice will have long lasting consequences to the country.
#BernieorBust would be furthering the disenfranchisement of the voices where the consequences truly matter in a real-quality of life matter. With an overwhelming support of people of color, a large majority of women, and the largest number of delegates and raw votes – there is a lot of people who have voiced support for Clinton. It is my utmost belief that #BernieorBust would not be from a place of solidarity to any community other than the privileged class.
