Letters to the Editor

Letter gave simplistic solutions for truancy

I was very disappointed that Randy Eriksen chose to blame parents for school truancy in his May 20 letter to the editor.

I assume Mr. Eriksen is not aware of the many reasons that children fail to attend school regularly. I suggest that he do some research on the causes of truancy.

Preventing truancy is not a simple task. More importantly, it is inconsiderate to imply that poor parenting is the only cause of truancy. I know parents who have done a wonderful job of parenting, but were unable to prevent their children from skipping school.

Those parents are hurting! Why would you add to their pain by such a simplistic suggestion. Telling parents to just buck up is insulting and uninformed.
