Vote yes on Olympia’s Proposition 1. Here’s why

For more than 10 years on our city council, I’ve seen how hard it is for working people in Olympia. They work long hours, and the rules often leave them behind. This November, we can fix some of that.

Proposition 1, also known as the Workers’ Bill of Rights, is a practical and fair way to make our community more stable and equal.

Here’s what it will provide.

Respect on the job

At its heart, Prop 1 says something simple: Everyone deserves respect at work.

This proposal gives basic protection to people who are paid by the hour. It guarantees things like:

  • Knowing your work schedule ahead of time.
  • Fair pay.
  • Clear rules about how you are paid.
  • Protection from being fired or punished for speaking up.

These aren’t extreme ideas. They are the simple building blocks of a life where you can actually plan things, take care of your family, and pay your bills without constant worry.

The real cost of waiting

Some people worry about the new rules. That’s okay. We should always look closely at new laws. But let’s look at what’s happening right now.

The current situation already causes problems:

  • Schedules change all the time, making it hard to arrange child care or go to school.
  • Wages are too low to pay rent.
  • Workers are scared to speak up about a problem because they fear they might lose their job.

Prop 1 doesn’t create problems — it fixes them.

Olympia can lead the way

Some say we should wait for a new law for the whole state. But waiting costs us time and money.

Olympia has led on important issues before such as climate change, housing, and public health. We can lead again! Prop 1 is a chance for our local government to solve our local problems and set a great example for other cities.

I’ve talked to workers who missed their child’s birthday because their shift changed at the last minute. They’ve skipped meals just to save money. They stayed quiet about unsafe conditions because they were afraid they would lose their job.

I’ve also worked with business owners who treat their staff well but feel pressure from competitors who cut corners. Prop 1 helps both groups. It makes the rules clear and holds everyone accountable.

It’s just practical

This isn’t about politics — it’s about common sense.

  • Stable schedules mean healthier people, stronger families and better businesses.
  • Fair wages mean fewer people need to rely on government help.
  • Clear pay rules mean less arguing and more trust between bosses and workers.

Everyone in our city benefits from these things.

Olympia is a place that believes in fairness and community. Prop 1 proves those values. It might not be perfect, but it is a big step toward a city where hard work is respected and everyone can succeed.

When you vote this November, please vote YES on Proposition 1. Fairness isn’t a special privilege, it’s our responsibility. After years of fighting for dignity in the workplace, I know Olympia is ready to lead again.
