Birding at Fort Steilacoom

Join this guided walk, led by an experienced birder, through the 342-acre park. This is a good walk for birders of all experience levels. Hear about Oregon trails

William Sullivan will give a program on new trails he discovered while researching the fourth edition of his book “100 Hikes/Travel Guide: Oregon Coast & Coast Range.” He is speaking at the Olympia Mountaineer’s Adventure Speaker Series. Telling the tiger muskie story

Jack Tipping, a retired state fish biologist, will talk about tiger muskies in Washington at the meeting of the Puget Sound Anglers South Sound Chapter. Meteor shower best seen early

You’ll have to wake up early to get a good glimpse of the Eta Aquarids meteor shower. Astronomers said viewing will be best in the hour or two before dawn Friday and Saturday. The meteor shower is caused as the Earth passes through debris left by Halley’s Comet.

Saturday

Run a 5k for free

Come out for this weekly 5-kilometer run sponsored by the Tacoma Runners. Participants of all skill levels are welcome. 8-9 a.m. Saturday; meet at the gates at the top of the hill above Owen Beach, Point Defiance Park, 5400 N. Pearl St., Tacoma. Free. Register at tacomarunners.com.

Key Peninsula community fair

More than 50 exhibitors will offer information on services and activities during the 16th annual Livable Community Fair.
