Mount Rainier National Park has announced that fires will be banned parkwide beginning on Friday.

The ban was prompted by this month’s hot, dry conditions that have increased chances for wildfires. The ban — which applies to all campfires and the ignition of wood, briquettes, or other fuel in fire pits, fire pans and barbecue grills — aims to reduce the risk of people starting a wildland fire.

Portable, petroleum-filled cooking stoves, heating devices and lanterns using liquefied or bottled fuel are still acceptable in the park. These devices must be able to be switched off.

Other fire-causing devices, including fireworks and tracer ammunition, are always illegal.

People who see smoke or flames in the park should call 911, or notify a park ranger.
