JARRELL COVE STATE PARK
What: Jarrell Cove State Park is a 43-acre marine camping area with 3,500 feet of shoreline on the northwest end of Harstine Island in South Puget Sound. Most visitors arrive by boat, but the area can be accessed by car.
When: Open 6:30 a.m.-10 p.m. in the summer and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the winter.
Where: Harstine Island.
History: The park is named for Philura Jarrell, the first pioneer woman to settle on the island.
Activities: The park offers hiking, biking, camping and easy access for swimming, diving, waterskiing, fishing and clamming. The park has badminton, horseshoe and volleyball facilities.
Getting there: From Interstate 5 in Olympia, take U.S. Highway 101 west to state Route 3. Take Route 3 north for 8 miles, then turn right on Pickering Road and go 4 miles to Harstine Island. Turn left at the first stop sign on the island and drive 4 miles to the park.
Cost: A $10 per day or $30 per year Discover Pass is required for each vehicle. Moorage is $10 per day. Boats longer than 20 feet must pay an additional 50 cents per foot.
