North Sound salmon derbies shuffle location, dates
There has been a shuffle in North Sound salmon derbies, with one event changing its headquarters location, a new derby being created as a result and a third changing its dates.
The Fidalgo-San Juan Islands chapter of Puget Sound Anglers is moving its Resurrection Salmon Derby from Friday Harbor to Anacortes. The derby, which offers a $10,000 prize for first place, will be Dec. 4-5 at Cap Sante Marina.
You can learn more about the derby at resurrectionderby.com.
Because of the move by Resurrection Derby organizers, supporters of a derby based at Friday Harbor are creating their own event, expected to run Dec. 3-5.
“Many of us who reside on San Juan Island, including other island residents, are committed to keeping a major derby in Friday Harbor beginning this year, Jimmie Lawson, chairman of the new derby, said in a statement.
People wanting information on the new derby, can send an email to Lawson at hawgheavencharters@gmail.com.
Organizers of the Roche Harbor Salmon Classic also have announced a change. To avoid conflicts with the 2016 Seattle Boat Show and a Super Bowl, the derby will be held Jan. 21-23.
