Christkindlmarkt
What: The 20th annual Bavarian-style market will welcome the Christmas season with activities and entertainment for the whole family during the weekend after Thanksgiving.
When: 11 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Nov. 27, 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Nov. 28 and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 29.
Where: Front Street Park and Leavenworth Festhalle, Leavenworth.
Activities: The event features authentic Bavarian foods, handmade arts and crafts, and gifts. There also will be Bavarian- and Christmas-themed entertainment, including the Enzian Alphorns from Leavenworth and the Boellerschutzen. A lantern parade will take place at 5 p.m. Nov. 27-28. Children can decorate their own lanterns at the Festhalle from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Nov. 27 and 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Nov. 28, for a $5 fee. There will be some predecorated lanterns on sale, $6 each, after 4 p.m. each day. Children’s craft activities will take place from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 27-28 in the Chumstick Grange Hall.
Admission: Free.
Of note: Christmas markets have been a tradition in Germany since the mid-1500s. Villagers would gather to sell homemade Christmas ornaments, decorations and gifts. The event is sponsored by Project Bayern, which promotes the old world theme in Leavenworth.
