Director looks at issues facing WDFW

Jim Unsworth, director of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife will talk about issues facing the agency at Wednesday’s meeting of the Olympia Chapter Of Trout Unlimited.

Unsworth’s presentation will include an update on steelhead fishery changes made recently by the Fish and Wildlife Commission, hatchery and genetic management plans, and Puget Sound wild steelhead gene banks.

Before being named director in 2015, Unsworth worked more than 30 years in wildlife management with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. Unsworth held several management positions for that agency, including deputy director, state big game manager and wildlife bureau chief.

There will be refreshments and a fishing equipment raffle following the presentation.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the North Olympia Fire Station, 5046 Boston Harbor Road NE, Olympia.

Climbing course begins Feb. 10

The Tacoma Mountaineers’ basic climbing course will use classroom lecture, field instruction and climbing experience that will enable students to safely climb the peaks of the Northwest. The course is scheduled to begin Feb. 10.

The course is set up to be completed in about eight months. Topics covered will include selection and care of equipment, wilderness travel and camping, glacier travel, belaying, rappelling, rock climbing and crevasse rescue.

During field trips and climbs, students will put these skills to practical use with experienced mountaineers.

The course costs $475. Classes will be held at the Tacoma Mountaineers Program Center, 2302 N. 30th St., Tacoma.

Gathering ideas for new park

The National Park Service and Department of Energy will hold a public meeting Feb. 4 to get the public’s input on planning for the Manhattan Project National Historical Park.

The Richland meeting will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Richland Library Gallery, 955 Northgate Drive, Richland.

The other meetings will be held at the other park sites in Oak Ridge, Tennessee; and Loa Alamos, New Mexico.

The public is being asked to share its thoughts about the key stories and interpretive ideas related to the park.
