WHAT: It’s all about the famed coastal bivalves at this annual event. You can cook them, eat them and maybe dig them.
WHEN: April 9-10.
WHERE: Various locations.
CLAMMING LESSONS: There will be free lessons on how to dig for clams each morning of the festival. They will take place on the beach off the Bolstad Beach approach. You must preregister for the lessons. Then, once you’ve dug your clams, how do you clean them? A local professional digger will give a short lecture and then demonstrate how to clean clams each morning.
CHOWDER WARS: There will be clam chowder competitions for local restaurants and amateur chefs. Twelve amateurs will compete for the title of Best Homemade Clam Chowder from 11 a.m.-noon April 9. The professional event will take place 1-3 p.m. April 9.
OTHER EVENTS: There will be a clam fritter cookoff, using a replica of the “world’s largest frying pan.” The Oregon Mermaids will be on hand on April 9, as well as street entertainers including the Beard’s Hollow Pirates, “Digger” the clam and Bathing Clam Beauties. Also that morning, there will be vendors at the Dennis Company, and an all-day beer garden by North Jetty Brewing Co. with other food for sale.
ADMISSION: Free, but there is a charge for some events.
