10th running of Tacoma City Marathon is Sunday morning
On Sunday morning, more than 2,200 runners are expected to hit the streets of Tacoma to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the city’s marathon.
And Tony Phillippi, co-founder of the race, is expecting an ideal day for running. Forecasts call for mostly sunny skies and temperatures near 50 degrees for the 7 a.m. start.
“The temperatures should creep up to the 60s by the end of the race,” Phillippi said. “I think you will see some good times. Some PRs (personal records) and Boston (Marathon) qualifiers.”
The course starts at the Tacoma Narrows Airport and travels over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, takes a lap through Point Defiance Park and then follows the waterfront to downtown Tacoma. Most of the 1,105 entries are for the half marathon. The event also includes a marathon relay, 5K run and kids run.
Last year, Shaun Frandsen of Kirkland won the marathon in a record 2 hours, 33 minutes, 14 seconds. Seattle’s Emily Meeks won the women’s race in 3:21:57. Neither runner was on the official registration list for this year’s race as of Tuesday evening.
Tacoma’s Michael Jorgensen and Kate Landau were winners of the 2015 half marathon.
Neither was registered for this year’s race as of Tuesday.
Finisher medals and participation shirts will include a design commemorating the 10th anniversary of the race.
Phillippi and Paul Morrison started the marathon in 2007, reviving the short-lived Tacoma marathon held in 1980 and 1981.
Only 14 people have run all nine Tacoma City Marathons. As of Tuesday, 12 of them were registered for this year’s race.
