Fishing report for May 10

SALT WATER

South Sound: Puget Sound is closed indefinitely to recreational salmon fishing. The Point Defiance Boathouse Marina staff says pressure has been light for ling cod. Tides are becoming less dramatic and should create more opportunities for anglers.

Shrimp: The season starts Saturday and Tacoma-area anglers will have just eight hours (7 a.m.-3 p.m.) to set their pots. South of the Narrows Bridges, shrimp season is scheduled to be open 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and May 18, 21 and 31.

Razor clams: Razor clam digging is allowed on the morning tides at Mocrocks through Thursday. Digging must be completed by noon, with the exception of Thursday, when it is allowed until 1 p.m. The next dig is proposed for May 20-22 at Mocrocks and May 20-21 at Copalis.

LAKES

American: David Anderson of Bill’s Boathouse recommends using orange Power Eggs or something similar to catch trout.

Bay: The state Department of Fish and Wildlife records show this lake near Lakebay was stocked last week with 4,600 catchable-size trout.

Clear (Pierce): Stocked last week with 5,800 rainbow trout.

Clear (Thurston): Stocked last week with 4,800 rainbow trout.

Duck: The state recently stocked this Grays Harbor lake with 2,200 trout.

Fort Borst: This Lewis County fishing spot got more than 2,000 new rainbow trout last week.

Hicks: The state added 3,775 fish last week to this Thurston County lake.

Island: The state added 180 rainbow trout last week to this Mason County lake.

Long: More than 1,000 rainbows were stocked here last week.

Mayfield: Tacoma Power released 4,000 rainbow trout last week.

Meridian: This Kent lake was recently stocked with 4,200 rainbow trout.

Mission: Stocked last week with more than 1,000 fish.

McIntosh: Nearly 4,800 catchable size rainbow trout were added to this lake last week.

Offut: May is traditionally a good month for fishing this lake. Was recently stocked with 150 rainbows.

Scanewa: Last week Tacoma Power released 610 spring chinook adults, 53 spring chinook jacks and nine winter-run steelhead.

Spanaway: Bud Herlitzka of the Spanaway Lake Boathouse says anglers are catching limits of trout at the south end of the lake. Trolling and still fishing both work. Bass and perch are also showing up in the catch, he said.

Summit: This Thurston County lake was stocked with more than 5,000 rainbow trout last week.

Wildcat: More than 2,000 rainbow trout were added here last week.

Chelan: Anton Jones of Darrell and Dad’s Guide Service says trout fishing is good in Manson Bay and along Colyar Ledge. Kokanee fishing is spotty but some have good luck between Fields and Rocky points.

Wapato (Chelan): Jones says this lake “continues to produce rainbow trout at a phenomenal rate since it’s opener in April. Fishing Pautzke’s Fire Bait in American Wildfire on a slip sinker rig with a 30-inch leader from an anchored boat will work.”

RIVERS

Columbia: Boat anglers are catching some sturgeon in the John Day Pool. The Dalles and John Day pools are producing walleye and bass.

Cowlitz: Spring chinook have been biting for bank anglers at the barrier dam and boat anglers on the lower river, according to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Last week Tacoma Power recovered 395 winter-run steelhead, 17 summer-run steelhead, 1,358 spring chinook adults and 91 spring chinook jacks at the hatchery separator. The power workers also released 323 spring chinook adults and 21 jacks at Packwood’s Franklin Bridge.

Kalama: Fishing has been better than the creel reports indicate, according to a state report.

Lewis: It seems that the few who are trying aren’t catching steelhead.

Tilton: Last week Tacoma Power released 12 winter-run steelhead at Morton’s Gust Backstrom Park.
