Mount Rainier
Paradise Inn to open for season
Kicking off its 99th year of operation, Paradise Inn at Mount Rainier National Park will open for the season Friday.
The 121-room inn also includes the Paradise Inn Dining Room, Tatoosh Café and a gift shop.
Visitors to the inn also can see some of the items built in 1919 by German carpenter Han Fraehnke, including the piano and 14-foot-tall grandfather clock in the lobby.

State forests
DNR sets meetings on target shooting
The state Department of Natural Resources is hosting a series of meetings in the next two month to gather input on how to best manage target shooting in select state forests.
The agency will hold discussions that center on target shooting opportunities without endangering the public or restricting other vital uses in Capitol, Tahuya, Harry Osborne and Yacolt Burn state forests, according to a department news release.
The first meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Mason High School Cafeteria, 150 E. North Mason School Road, Belfair.
Another South Sound session will be at 6:30 p.m. June 2 at The Evergreen State College Longhouse Education and Cultural Center, 2800 Dogtooth Lane NW, Olympia.
The other sessions are May 31 in Vancouver, Washington, and June 1 in Burlington.
Target shooting is currently allowed during the day on most department-managed lands in areas with an unobstructed, earth backstop that can safely stop all bullets, according to the release. No shooting is permitted within 500 feet of a recreation site or structure. Shooting is also not permitted across, along or down roads or trails.
Fly fishing
Class can help develop casting skills
Beginning fly fishermen can develop their casting skills by attending a fundamentals of fly casting class offered Saturday by Sportsman’s Warehouse in Federal Way, 1405 S. 348th St.
The session combines instruction on equipment, leaders, knots and fly casting, demonstration and practice on private water. In addition, there is instruction on rod assembly and care, stance, hook removal as well as various casting techniques. A modest casting guide is free.
Instructors include Darrel Martin, certified by the International Federation of Fly-Fishers (United States) and The Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructors (United Kingdom), and Michael Martin, an experienced guide and instructor.
The class will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., including travel time to the class location.
Bring your own rod, reel and line if you have them, otherwise all equipment is available for a free day-loan during the class. Students also should bring rain gear, a brimmed hat, protective eyewear, lunch and something to drink.
The cost is $50 (cash only, includes a $30 deposit to reserve your spot). For registration and more information, contact the store at 253-835-4100.
