Mount Rainier opens Sunrise Road to cyclists, hikers Friday
Hikers and bicyclists will be able to use Sunrise Road at Mount Rainier National Park beginning Friday (June 10). Vehicle access, however, is not expected to be allowed until July 1.
Park crews have been removing snow and winter debris from the road in the northeast corner of the park. Enough of the road has been cleared to allow nonmotorized vehicle access, said park Superintendent Randy King.
He said people using the road through Sunday will not encounter any vehicles on the road. Beginning Monday, park vehicles will be traveling to Sunrise as park staff members work to prepare that area for its summer opening. That involves removing snow from around the buildings, connecting utilities such as water, electricity and sewage, and installing signs.
Park visitors in that portion of the park can drive as far as White River, where there are services including toilets. The White River Wilderness Information Center is open daily from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. The White River Campground is scheduled to open for the season June 24.
